British Values

🐝 British Values 🐝

Teaching British Values at Meadow Green Primary School

The Department for Education (DfE) has reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”

The Government originally set out its definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values continue to be an important part of school life.

At Meadow Green Primary School, these values are regularly promoted and embedded through our curriculum, ethos, and everyday practice.

🐝 Democracy

Children are given regular opportunities to have their voices heard and to take part in decision-making:

  • Each class creates a Class Charter, agreed by all pupils
  • We have a School Council, with representatives elected from each class
  • The School Council meets regularly to discuss ideas and issues raised in class
  • Pupils complete annual questionnaires to share their views about the school

🐝 These opportunities help children understand that their voice matters.

🐝 The Rule of Law

The importance of rules and laws is consistently reinforced at Meadow Green.

  • Children learn school rules from an early age
  • They are taught why rules exist and how they keep us safe
  • Pupils understand the consequences of breaking rules and laws
  • Visitors such as the Police and Fire Service support learning and understanding

🐝 This helps children develop respect for rules in school and in the wider world.

🐝 Individual Liberty

Children are encouraged to make safe and informed choices within a supportive environment.

  • Pupils are taught about rights and personal freedoms
  • They are supported to make choices safely and responsibly
  • Online safety and PSHE lessons help children understand how to stay safe

🐝 Children are encouraged to grow in confidence and independence.

🐝 Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our school values.

  • Children learn how their actions affect others
  • Everyone in the school community is expected to treat others with respect
  • Respectful behaviour is modelled and celebrated throughout school life

🐝 We promote kindness, consideration, and respect in everything we do.

🐝 Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs

We actively promote understanding and respect for diversity:

  • We celebrate a range of faiths and cultures throughout the year
  • Religious Education and PSHE support understanding of different beliefs
  • Visitors and members of different faith communities share their experiences with pupils
  • Children learn about different places of worship and traditions

🐝 This helps children develop respect and appreciation for the wider world.
