SCIENCE CURRICULUM INTENT

At Meadow Green, we appreciate that science education provides the foundations for understanding the world.

We believe that science should be taught through experience and investigation supported by a firm foundation of knowledge and an ability to begin to explain their experiences in a scientific manner. The sense of curiosity and excitement about natural phenomena are encouraged, and are reinforced by the development of skills relating to rational explanation – knowing that the spectrum can be obtained by the refraction of light does not diminish the joy of seeing a rainbow!

Science skills and knowledge are delivered progressively – building on the ‘shoulders of giants’ of their own prior experience (within and outside of school) and learning. We provide a curriculum which introduces aspects of science sequentially over the course of a unit of work and across the years of study.

Investigations and similar activities are placed within a scientific context, and give children an opportunity to increase their own skills and knowledge through enquiry and explanation. A combination of enquiry types will be used including teacher demonstration, child investigation and, when appropriate, the use of online resources.
