Meadow Green Primary School

Class 5F Mr Fry

Welcome to Year 5 — a year of challenge, curiosity and growing independence!

Our Staff

  • Mr Fry - Teacher
  • Mrs Robley - Teaching Assistant

Year 5 is an exciting time as children develop their knowledge, skills and confidence across the curriculum. They are encouraged to think more deeply, take greater responsibility for their learning and become increasingly independent.

We want children to enjoy learning, challenge themselves and take pride in what they achieve. Our classroom is a positive and supportive place where children are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, make mistakes and keep trying.

📚 What will we learn?

Children will enjoy a broad and exciting curriculum, including:

English • Maths • Science • History • Geography • Art • Design & Technology • Computing • Music • PE • Spanish • RE • PSHE

Learning is enriched through practical activities, creative projects, educational visits and opportunities to apply learning in different ways.

📖 English & Reading

Children develop their reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and handwriting through a wide range of high-quality texts.

Reading regularly remains important in Year 5. We encourage children to read widely, discuss what they have read and develop their own interests as readers.

Children also learn to write for different purposes and audiences, developing their vocabulary, ideas and ability to communicate clearly.

🔢 Maths

Children develop their understanding of number, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, geometry and statistics.

We place a strong emphasis on fluency, times tables, reasoning and problem-solving, encouraging children to explain their thinking and use their mathematical knowledge confidently.

🐝 In Year 5, we want children to:

  • Be Kind
  • Be Respectful
  • Be Ambitious
  • Listen carefully and learn well
  • Think for themselves and ask questions
  • Have a go and keep trying
  • Take responsibility for their learning
  • Be organised and increasingly independent
  • Take pride in their achievements

🏡 How can you help at home?

There are lots of simple ways you can support your child:

📖 Read regularly and talk about books together
✖️ Practise times tables and number facts
💬 Talk about their learning and encourage them to explain their ideas
🎒 Encourage independence with homework, organisation and belongings
🌍 Explore together — museums, libraries, walks and places of interest can all support learning

💙 Working Together

We believe that children do best when school and home work together.

Year 5 is an important year as children prepare for the increased responsibilities and opportunities of Year 6. We will support them to become confident, independent and enthusiastic learners who are ready for the next step.

We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning, challenge and achievement together!
